Hand Gliding with Donald Trump: A Lesson in Fear

Hand gliding with Donald TrumpIt is a rare occurrence when I use a blog platform to share a dream. This is a necessary exception.

This morning I had a dream that I was invited to join a hand gliding adventure orchestrated by Donald Trump.  Donald Trump had constructed a 12 person hand gliding machine that would travel from New York City to Los Angeles in 1.5 hours.  Along for the ride was an A-list team of achievers including Candice Bergen, Whoppi Goldberg, Suzy Welch, Levar Burton and Ivanka Trump.

I was honored to be hand-selected by Donald Trump to attend a luncheon to announce his new venture.  During the luncheon Donald Trump suddenly announced “Hey, let’s all go hand gliding.” Then he personally turned to me and said “Stephanie, why don’t you join me.” “Me!” I thought “You want me to join you?”  First of all I did not know how my dream had booked me a seat at the table with Donald Trump and now he wanted me to make history with him.

What he didn’t know is that my biggest fear was flying.  You can recite all the tactics in the big book of reasoning to attempt to convince me that flying is the safest method of travel – I am still not buying it.  Logic coupled with spiritual motivation (when it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go) will not erase a lifetime fear of flying.  Instantly I knew that I was staying behind.

As we walked to the hangar I expected to see a mini airplane, instead I was introduced to a 6 row, 12 seat harness with white oversized feathers made to resemble wings.  Did Donald Trump really expect for us to fly to Los Angeles in a Tonka Toy on wings?  I watched as everyone calmly suited up and harnessed themselves to their seat.  Noticing that I was the lone soul out, Donald firmly instructed “Stephanie, you will pair up with Ivanka.  Come on!”  I immediately tried to rationalize my fears with a barrage of questions.

“How long did it take you to make this hand-glider (in man hours)?”

“Do you really think it is equipped to hold 12 people?

“What if we run into other airplanes?”

“Is there a hand-gliders air traffic controller?”

“If Delta Airlines can’t go to Los Angeles in 1.5 hours, how can you?”

Donald, not wanting to leave me behind, said “Stephanie, you will be fine.  When we land we are going to the zoo and then to the Lakers game.” The others trusted him enough that when he said “Let’s go” they went.  He even revealed to me the reward waiting for me at the end yet I was still afraid. Even though they needed my weight to support the balance, I still did not feel compelled to abandon my fear to help another. I declined with conviction and off they went.

I was so scared of the unknown that I positioned myself to get left behind.  My subconscious knew that I was dreaming, but my conscious fear would not allow me to relax and embrace this journey.  Whether awake or asleep the risk seemed so real. My fear was so present that it shadowed me to another place that only invited reward and opportunity.

Begin within:

  • Who is leaving you behind?
  • Thanks to fear, what opportunities have you missed?
  • Thus far in life, what has been your experience with fear?
  • How has fear interrupted your dream?
  • Have you missed the chance to soar with eagles?
  • Have you made a conscious choice not to move forward?
  • Is comfort more important than growth?

I don’t know if Donald Trump and his “Get Rich Crew” ever made it to their destination.  I do know, however, I was left standing still.

Here’s to Your Success!
