The Sarah Palin Syndrome: Chapter 1 – The Bridges You Burn

sarah palin syndromeI do not like to pronounce my pet peeves publicly, but I have “duly noted” several moments of Sarah Palin’s  promotional book appearances that are worth discussing. Palin, an increasingly intriguing poly-feminist (my new term for political feminist) fixture, has launched an opinionated campaign to set the record straight. To celebrate Sarah Palin’s 413 page book debut “Going Rogue” I will capture crucial teaching moments that defined her influence in politics.

Chapter 1 The Bridges You Burn Now……

…. may be the ones you have to cross later. When John McCain selected Sarah Palin to be on the Republican ticket, he extended her an opportunity on a nationally recognized platform.  The presidential campaign of 2008 was historical in publicity, national interest and  diverse voter turnout. Sarah Palin was a surprise addition to the dual presidential ride for many reasons.  Prior to her public reveal, I knew nothing of her credibility and her political beliefs.  Many like voters had to play catch up in order to formulate a decision of who they thought she was.  Despite her “wet behind the political ears” reputation, the buzz swarmed around the peaked curiosity of a virtually unknown vice-presidential contender.  Even after the Republican defeat, Sarah Palin was still an intriguing topic on the minds of Americans. John McCain influenced her household status by selecting her to be his running mate.  We could question Sarah Palin’s sustainability if she had not been John McCain’s running mate.

Enter the Flaw: In the time since, Palin’s outspoken displeasure for the way she was portrayed during the election has become her badge of political dishonor.  Palin publicly raised awareness on the image disparity of women and mothers in politics.  Named were all of the key McCain players who “purposefully” contributed to her negative media portrayal.   “Going Rogue”  encourages the literary finger-pointing of   media czars, McCain staffers, political firecrackers and misinformed Obama supporters who contributed to  the stepchild treatment of Palin.   Wisely, Palin places no blame on John McCain himself, but makes no apologies for her mild tyrant against McCain staffers.  Palin confuses the right to express her opinion with the expected etiquette of a person who has not yet reached the pinnacle of success.  You never know who you may need on your way up.  If Palin’s intent is to rise to the call of a political movement, then speaking ill of those who were in the circle of trying to make a name for you (as slighted as the result was) is considered “unladylike” by many standards.  The commercialized Bounty power towel slogan of “rinse and reuse” should reflect her attitude going forward when addressing controversial  alliances.

Leadership Lesson: Speak up, not down.  When anyone asks you a question regarding a situation that is linked to controversy consider it an opportunity to take the high road.  It is quite easy to engage in conversation that is less flattering of the person you believe wronged you.  It takes one who is forgiving of others faults to excel in communication expected of a leader.  Thank the person for the opportunity and move on.  You are better for it and by all accounts you are better without them.   Never speak against those who had an influence in elevating you.   Had it not been for John McCain’s belief in Sarah Palin’s potential to be a great co-leader then she would be an unfamiliar face from a less familiar place.  She may have elevated to a monumental status eventually, but I guarantee it would have taken twice as long and it would have been twice as hard.

Stephanie’s advice for Sarah: Remember what side your bread is buttered on (borrowed family wisdom).
