The Tightrope of Talent: How Do you Define Talent? (take the quiz)

Everyone has a talent.  Everyone was gifted with a defining talent that makes them unique.  How you feel about your talent is as important as your talent itself. In the workplace, talent is used to share a liberating passion or can be the  lingering  reason that you are unhappy in your career.

Talent is defined as ______.

  1. Something I do well.
  2. Something that I do flawlessly.
  3. Something that I am passionate about.
  4. Something that compliments my job description.
  1. Talent is not something that you only do well or good. To have a talent  you should exceed the common standards.  Just because you made a “B+” in algebra does not mean you should pursue a career as an accountant.

The Journey of A Dream

Everyone has a dream.  A longstanding dream, a newly imagined dream, a dream fulfilled or a dream on pause, everyone fosters a grand illusion of a dream.   In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I will illustrate the journey of an incredible dream.

A Dream produces action – Having a dream is not enough.  There is an innate quality in most people that creates a succession of dreams to be explored in ones lifetime.  The distinction of dreams achieved and those never seen can be summarized in one word – Action.  Action, by definition is a force of voluntary movement. Dr. Martin Luther had a dream, but we never would have known had he not committed the dream into action. King could have made the choice to watch and wish.  Had he done so then the state of freedom would have been compromised.  Instead he knew that he could make a difference.  His dream to alter the freedom of a people changed the sovereignty of America. The responsibility that Dr. Martin Luther King accepted was necessary in order to see the dream to completion.  King envisioned the opposition.  He prepared for setbacks.  He knew the minute he set his foot in motion it was bound to disturb the earth underneath.  Any step forward shakes the boundaries by which the quality of your life depends.  No movement leaves all existence in order.  A step backward alters no progress. Having a dream and living a dream are the distinguishable elements.

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!

pinochio carlosToday’s blog post was going to be one of motivational purity, but I guess the blog angels had something else in mind.  While watching Good Morning America on Monday, I saw the exclusive interview with Carlos Allen.  As few know, Carlos Allen was the second stream of “alleged” party crashers at November’s White House State Dinner.  Preceding the discovery of Allen’s crash was the uproar of the uninvited presence of Washington socialites Tareq and Michaele Salahi.

Watch the exclusive Good Morning America interview

Monday’s interview with Robin Roberts was painful to watch.  I found it impossible to hold judgment due to the transparent assurance that Carlos Allen was lying.  Although my opinion has never sealed a peace treaty, I noted a sea of red flags which indicated Carlos Allen was an imperfect liar.

Happy New You!

Career Tier Blog - Happy New YouI am not much on resolutions.  I rarely resolve to do much of anything.  I am, however, a strong advocate of goals.  Goals are microscopic instruments of  preparation which motivate you in the  purposed direction of achieving your dreams.   I dusted off a 2001 “Achieve Your Dreams” calendar treasure that I have been anxious to share.  To date, this is the best standard of goal setting that I have encountered.

Guidelines for Setting Goals

  1. Envision your goals. You must be able to conceptualize a goal so it is understandable and then be able to identify clearly what the first step should be in achieving it.  You are on your way if you can see yourself achieving the goal down the road.
  2. Set goals that are meaningful. if all you do is set a list of goals that would be nice to accomplish, forget it.  In order to achieve goals, you must have a strong desire to do so.

The Sarah Palin Syndrome: Chapter 1 – The Bridges You Burn

sarah palin syndromeI do not like to pronounce my pet peeves publicly, but I have “duly noted” several moments of Sarah Palin’s  promotional book appearances that are worth discussing. Palin, an increasingly intriguing poly-feminist (my new term for political feminist) fixture, has launched an opinionated campaign to set the record straight. To celebrate Sarah Palin’s 413 page book debut “Going Rogue” I will capture crucial teaching moments that defined her influence in politics.

Chapter 1 The Bridges You Burn Now……

…. may be the ones you have to cross later. When John McCain selected Sarah Palin to be on the Republican ticket, he extended her an opportunity on a nationally recognized platform.  The presidential campaign of 2008 was historical in publicity, national interest and  diverse voter turnout. Sarah Palin was a surprise addition to the dual presidential ride for many reasons.  Prior to her public reveal, I knew nothing of her credibility and her political beliefs.  Many like voters had to play catch up in order to formulate a decision of who they thought she was.  Despite her “wet behind the political ears” reputation, the buzz swarmed around the peaked curiosity of a virtually unknown vice-presidential contender.  Even after the Republican defeat, Sarah Palin was still an intriguing topic on the minds of Americans. John McCain influenced her household status by selecting her to be his running mate.  We could question Sarah Palin’s sustainability if she had not been John McCain’s running mate.
